Al-Jalīl (ٱلْجَلِيلُ) – The Majestic

Meaning & Linguistic Roots

Al-Jalīl comes from the root ج-ل-ل (jīm-lām-lām), which conveys meanings of greatness, loftiness, and sublimity. It is related to “jalālah” — grandeur, magnificence, and majesty — and is closely tied to the awe-inspiring presence of Allah that humbles all else in existence.

While other Names such as Al-‘Aẓīm (The Magnificent) emphasize divine greatness in terms of vastness and power, Al-Jalīl points toward awe-inspiring majesty — a greatness that commands both reverence and love.

This Name is not directly mentioned in the Qur’an, but is affirmed through the Qur’anic expression “dhul-jalāli wal-ikrām”:

ذُو ٱلْجَلَـٰلِ وَٱلْإِكْرَامِ
“Owner of Majesty and Honor.”

Qur’anic Echoes of His Majesty

Though the exact Name Al-Jalīl is not mentioned explicitly, Allah’s majesty shines in verses that echo His elevated status:

وَيَبْقَىٰ وَجْهُ رَبِّكَ ذُو ٱلْجَلَـٰلِ وَٱلْإِكْرَامِ
“But the Face of your Lord will remain, full of Majesty and Honor.”
— Surah Ar-Rahman (55:27)
تَبَارَكَ ٱسْمُ رَبِّكَ ذِي ٱلْجَلَـٰلِ وَٱلْإِكْرَامِ
“Blessed is the Name of your Lord, Owner of Majesty and Honor.”

Reflection & Inner Resonance

To know Al-Jalīl is to feel the weight of sacred awe — that trembling reverence one feels when standing before something far greater than the self. Mountains may crumble, kings may fall, but Al-Jalīl remains untouched, towering in splendor, perfection, and nobility.

  • His Majesty is not like that of worldly rulers, who claim greatness but are bound by mortality and error.

The Prophet’s Worship and Reverence

One of the most powerful manifestations of the Prophet ﷺ’s recognition of Al-Jalīl was his deep, awe-filled worship.

It is authentically narrated that:

“The Prophet ﷺ would stand [in prayer] at night until his feet became swollen.”
When asked why he did this, though his past and future sins had been forgiven, he replied:
“Should I not be a grateful servant (ʿabd shakūr)?”

This was not out of fear of punishment, but reverence and gratitude before the Most Majestic.

And during the Miʿrāj — the Ascension — while we have limited authentic detail, we know from strong narrations that the Prophet ﷺ was brought closer to Allah than any other creation, culminating in the reception of Ṣalāh (prayer) — a direct gift from the Divine. That moment represents the ultimate human proximity to Divine Majesty, yet the Prophet ﷺ returned more humble than ever.

Imam al-Ghazālī’s Reflection

In Al-Maqṣad al-Asnā, Imām al-Ghazālī writes:

“Al-Jalīl is the One who is great in rank and station — whose reality is beyond grasp, whose commands are mighty, and whose sovereignty is complete. He is venerated by hearts, revered by souls, and feared with reverence, not terror.”

This reverence (khushū‘) before Al-Jalīl is not fear in the worldly sense — it is a deep spiritual humility, a recognition of His grandeur, and our smallness before Him.

That is what it means to know Al-Jalīl:
To be humbled, quieted, and refined — and to live in devotion, not dominance.

Practical Reflection & Dhikr Suggestion

Scholars recommend invoking this Name when you seek:

  • To increase your awe and reverence for Allah in prayer
  • To develop humility and spiritual presence before Divine greatness
  • To purify the heart of arrogance by remembering the One whose majesty overshadows all

Recommended Dhikr:
Repeat “Yā Jalīl” — especially in sujūd (prostration) — as a reminder that you bow before the Lord of Glory, not just in body but in heart.

How Al-Jalīl Guides the Seeker Today

  • When you feel small, unseen, or irrelevant, remember: you were created by Al-Jalīl — and no creation of His is without value.
  • When your ego rises, or when you become absorbed in status or recognition — pause and whisper:
    “You alone are Al-Jalīl — majestic is Your Name, not mine.”
  • The more you recognize His majesty, the more you realize the dignity in humility.

Yā Jalīl —
Let my heart be drawn to Your beauty,
and my soul be softened by Your majesty.
Strip me of pride, robe me in reverence,
and let me walk humbly in the presence of Your greatness.
