Al-Khāfiḍ is the One who lowers whom He wills — in status, rank, or arrogance — according to His perfect wisdom. He brings down tyrants, humbles the arrogant, and diminishes falsehood. His “lowering” is always just, and it often paves the way for hearts to return to Him

Linguistic Meaning
.The Name Al-Khāfiḍ comes from the triliteral root khāʾ-fāʾ-ḍād (خ-ف-ض), which means to lower, to humble, or to diminish. In Arabic, something kha-fi-ḍa has been brought down from height — whether literally or metaphorically. When attributed to Allah, it signifies His power to reduce the mighty, humble the proud, and flatten injustice.
Qur’anic Reference
While the Name Al-Khāfiḍ does not appear as-is in the Qur’an, the meaning is clearly expressed:
وَٱللَّهُ يُقَدِّرُ ٱلَّيْلَ وَٱلنَّهَارَ ۚ عَلِمَ أَن لَّن تُحْصُوهُ فَتَابَ عَلَيْكُمْ فَٱقْرَءُوا۟ مَا تَيَسَّرَ مِنَ ٱلْقُرْآنِ ۚ
“Allah causes the night to shorten and lengthen…”
— Surah Al-Muzzammil (73:20)
Also in Allah’s decree:
إِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَبِٱلْمِرْصَادِ
“Surely, your Lord is ever watchful.”
— Surah Al-Fajr (89:14)
The effect of khafḍ is also seen in:
“Whoever humbles himself for Allah, He will raise him.”
— (Sahih Muslim)
Spiritual Meaning
Allah lowers for many reasons: to awaken the heedless, to correct the oppressor, or to purify the believer. His khafḍ may look like loss or humiliation on the outside — but it is often divine mercy in disguise. The fall of a tyrant is justice. The collapse of arrogance is a doorway to humility.
If you’ve been lowered — financially, socially, emotionally — ask yourself: What is Allah trying to show me? Often, Al-Khāfiḍ prepares us for elevation through the experience of descent.
Reflection from Imam al-Ghazālī
In al-Maqṣad al-Asnā, Imām al-Ghazālī explains:
“Al-Khāfiḍ is the One who humbles the proud and lowers the unjust. He does so in ways that awaken the heart — through trial, disgrace, or spiritual veiling — and it is from His mercy that He lowers so that one may rise again purified.”
The Name Al-Khāfiḍ is paired with its complement: Ar-Rāfi‘ — The One Who Raises. For every lowering, there is a potential rising.
Inner Reflection
Sometimes we fall in status, reputation, or position — and the world thinks we are finished. But Al-Khāfiḍ lowers only to teach, to correct, to transform. Accept these moments with humility and hope. For the one who turns to Allah in their lowest moment is never truly low.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Whoever humbles himself for Allah, Allah will raise him.”
(Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim)

Count: 114 times, with deep reflection on balance — lowering the ego, raising the soul.
