Al-‘Afuww (ٱلْعَفُوُّ) — The Pardoner
ٱلْعَفُوُّ
He, who pardons all who repent sincerely as if they had no previous sin.
Al-‘Afuww comes from the root ع-ف-و (‘ayn-fā-wāw) which means to erase, to pardon, to overlook, or to efface completely. It carries the meaning of not just forgiving, but removing all traces — as if the sin never occurred.
Imām al-Ghazālī explains:
“Al-‘Afuww is the One who erases sins and disregards faults. His pardon is greater than mere forgiveness — for He not only forgives, but makes it as if the sin never was.”

This Name offers us the hope not just of release from punishment — but of complete spiritual cleansing, renewal, and divine affection.
Qur’anic References
The Name Al-‘Afuww appears five times in the Qur’ān — always in the context of Allah’s immense generosity and pardon:
إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ كَانَ عَفُوًّۭا غَفُورًۭا
“Indeed, Allah is Pardoning and Forgiving.”
(Surah An-Nisā’ 4:43)
وَٱللَّهُ عَفُوٌّ غَفُورٌۭ
“And Allah is Pardoning and Forgiving.”
(Surah Al-Ḥajj 22:60)
إِن تُبْدُوا۟ خَيْرًا أَوْ تُخْفُوهُ أَوْ تَعْفُوا۟ عَن سُوٓءٍۢ فَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ كَانَ عَفُوًّۭا قَدِيرًۭا
“If you show kindness openly or conceal it, or pardon an offense — then indeed, Allah is Pardoning, Powerful.”
(Surah An-Nisā’ 4:149)
Imam al-Ghazālī’s Insight
Al-Ghazālī draws a clear distinction between Al-Ghafūr, At-Tawwāb, and Al-‘Afuww:
- At-Tawwāb — accepts your return
- Al-Ghafūr — covers your sin
- Al-‘Afuww — erases your sin completely
“To forgive is to cover a fault. But to pardon is to remove the effect altogether — from the book of deeds, from your record, from your soul.”
This Divine Attribute calls us to turn to Allah not just seeking forgiveness, but longing for purification and a new beginning.
Hadith Reflections
During the last ten nights of Ramadan, the Prophet ﷺ taught us a very specific du‘ā to seek Al-‘Afuww:
اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّكَ عَفُوٌّ تُحِبُّ الْعَفْوَ فَاعْفُ عَنِّي
“O Allah, You are Pardoning, and You love to pardon — so pardon me.”
— Jami‘ at-Tirmidhi, 3513 (ḥasan)
This highlights not only Allah’s name Al-‘Afuww — but His love for pardoning. He does not forgive reluctantly. He forgives lovingly.
The Prophet ﷺ also said:
“When the servant confesses his sin, then repents — Allah accepts his repentance and erases it.”
— Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī
Practical Reflection & Dhikr Suggestion
Al-‘Afuww is for those who carry heavy regrets, secret sins, or repeated failures. When you feel too broken, too flawed — this Name invites you not just to be forgiven, but to be made whole again.
Suggested Dhikr:
- Repeat “Yā ‘Afuww, ‘Afū ‘annī” (O Pardoner, pardon me) especially in the last third of the night
- Say it often during du‘ā, especially during the last ten nights of Ramadan and at moments of sincere repentance
- Reflect on it when you are afraid of the consequences of your past or uncertain of your worth
Scholarly Advice
Ibn Rajab al-Ḥanbalī writes:
“Al-‘Afuww does not only remove the sin — He replaces it with reward. This is a divine generosity beyond comprehension.”
— Laṭā’if al-Ma‘ārif
Even your tears, your struggles, and your broken-hearted repentance are remembered and honored by Al-‘Afuww.
