The Beauty of Tawbah: Returning to Allah Again and Again

1. What Is Tawbah?
Tawbah means to turn back — to leave the wrong, regret it, and return to Allah with the intention of staying near.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Every child of Adam sins, and the best of those who sin are those who repent.”

“Indeed, Allah loves those who constantly repent and purify themselves.”
(Qur’an 2:222)

5. The Secret of Returning Often
Sometimes we fall again. But don’t stop returning.
Ibn al-Qayyim said:
“A sin that brings you back to Allah is better than a good deed that makes you arrogant.”
Allah does not tire of forgiving — we tire of asking. But when we come back again, He is still there.
6. Signs of Accepted Tawbah
- You feel remorse, but also relief
- You grow in humility
- You avoid the triggers of the sin
- You feel softer in your prayers
- Your heart feels like it’s found its way back

“Yā Muqallib al-qulūb, thabbit qalbī ʿalā dīnik.”
“O Turner of hearts, make my heart firm upon Your religion.”

Surround yourself with those who inspire you, not those who distract you.

Instead of only trying to stop, start something good — a new act of dhikr, charity, learning, or service
The most complete way to do Tawbah is what scholars call Tawbah al-Nasūḥ — sincere repentance. It includes:
1. Stop the sin immediately
Whatever it is — cease it without delay.
2. Regret it deeply
Feel the weight of the mistake and let it humble you.
3. Resolve not to return
Even if you slip again later, this resolve must be real in the moment.
4. (If the sin involved others) Make amends
Return stolen rights, apologize, restore honor, or undo harm if possible.
♂️ The Prophet ﷺ also taught specific acts of repentance:
✨ Istighfār (Seeking Forgiveness)
The Prophet ﷺ would say more than 70 times a day:
“Astaghfirullāh wa atūbu ilayh.”
“I seek Allah’s forgiveness and turn to Him.”
✨ Ṣalāt at-Tawbah (The Prayer of Repentance)
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“If a servant commits a sin, then makes wudu’ properly, prays two rakʿahs, and asks Allah for forgiveness, Allah will forgive him.”
